My interest in gangs began on a personal level, when as a teen, gang experience eventually landed me at Deuel Vocational Institute for Men in Tracy, California. I served three and one half years there and was released to serve four and a half more years on parole. While at Tracy, I graduated from highschool and upon my release, began my professional education at Fullerton College. I then attended California University, Fullerton, for my B.A. and Master's degrees. I began my teaching career at Cal State Fullerton on January 30, 1969.
I have been called upon by the courts to research, consult and to testify to my findings in cases involving criminal street gangs. I have worked on more than25 homicide cases invoking the STEP Act or California P.C. Section 186.22. I have shared my research over the years with police chiefs of California, police academies, probation, parole and prison guard associations, and academic and community organizations.
